Stamford

As of the year 2010, it is the 4th biggest city in the state of Connecticut and the 8th largest city in New England. The city of Stamford is a part of the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area.

The Metro-North Railroad is a commuter rail system used for metropolitan NYC, travels via the New Haven Line through the city of Stamford. These trains offer faster travel into Stamford City. Within an hour drive of Stamford City are a total of six major airports such as the John F. Kennedy International Airport, which is situated within New York, and the Newark Liberty International Airport, that is situated in New Jersey.

The native residents of the area first referred to the area where Stamford currently sits as Rippowam, as did the first European settlers. Nevertheless, the name was later changed to Stamford after a town situated in Lincolnshire, England. On July 1, the year 1640, Chief Ponus and Captain Turner of the New Haven Colony signed the deed to Stamford. Because of Stamford's nearness to the state of New York, the main industry of the city during the 18th century become merchandising by water.

Even if it wasn't as famous as the Salem witch trial, the city of Stamford had its own witch trial during 1692. Although the accusations were not as fanatical as those that were thrown around in Salem, they grew to prominence through gossip and hysterics.

During the late 19th century, New York residents began to build summer homes along the seashore. Some even transferred there permanently and commuted by train to the city of Manhattan, although this practice did not become commonplace until much later. In the year 1893 the city was incorporated.

Situated within the city of Stamford, there are several corporate headquarters, including many Courant 100, Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies. Amongst the biggest head office that are located in Stamford are Tasty Bite, World Wrestling Entertainment, and Pitney Bowes. Also, Stamford is home to the Norther American Headquarters of UBS. The Royal Bank of Scotland runs its North American operations from Stamford, including its RBS Greenwich Capital subsidiary.

Due to the high rental costs in Stamford, numerous big businesses including MeadWestvaco, Xerox, GE Capital, International Paper, NBC and Clairol have transferred their offices outside of the city of Stamford.

There are several university campuses situated within Stamford, such as the Sacred Heart University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Bridgeport. The University of Connecticut's campus was opened during the year 1998 in a big, recently renovated building located downtown, that was the big Bloomingdales store former home. The two other university campuses are situated within the River Bend Executive Center, that is the leading communication and information center of Fairfield County. All of these campuses are commuter campuses.
